Powerball is Google’s Most Searched Term for 2016

According to Google, Powerball was the most popular search term in the US in 2016. Other contenders for the top spot were late pop icon, Prince, Hurricane Matthew, Donald Trump and Pokémon Go.

The record-breaking $1.58 billion Powerball jackpot, which began its meteoric rise in November 2015, set cyberspace on fire with a host of media reporting on the massive prize. This was a major factor in Powerball clinching the Number One spot in Google’s Top 10 list.

Powerball’s popularity continued well into 2016 due to the mystery surrounding the identity of the third winner.

Then in July, a couple from Chino Hills, California, came forward to claim their share of $528.8 million which saw searches for winning Powerball numbers start to decline.

The Top 10 Google searches for 2016 were:

1. Powerball

2. Prince

3. Hurricane Matthew

4. Pokémon Go

5. Slither.io

6. Olympics

7. David Bowie

8. Donald Trump

9. Election

10. Hillary Clinton

One thing is certain, whether the US Powerball jackpot is $40 million or $1 billion and whether it makes the Top 10 list or not, this is a lottery that needs no introduction and will continue to charm players the world over for years to come.
