$7.5 Million Powerball jackpot
The biggest Powerball jackpot on African soil reached an estimated $7.5 million (R102 million) in June 2011. The winning ticket was purchased in the Free State province of South Africa. Unfortunately the winning was never claimed.
Cape Town hits gold!
Dubbed the ‘biggest lottery win in South Africa’, in February 2010, a mother of two from Cape Town won more than $6 million (R91 million). The millionaire mom, who wished to remain anonymous, told media at the time that it was her first time playing the lottery.
Talk about beginner’s luck!
Powerball win in Limpopo
In July 2016, a man from Limpopo, a province in South Africa bordering Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique clinched the third biggest Powerball jackpot ever to be won in South Africa. He won more than $6.4 million (R87 million).
Western Cape lottery win
In July 2010, a 50 year-old man from the Western Cape province, in South Africa, spent just over $2 (R30) on a lottery ticket and he won more than $5 million (R69 million). What did he do with his millions? He started his own business and continued his longstanding charitable work with various organisations in his community.
